Confidentiality Matters To Sperm/Egg Donors

A recent study presented at the joint meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Canadian Fertility Society found that compensation and anonymity are key to an individual’s decision to donate egg or sperm.

A British team surveyed American donors and found that about half would not donate if their privacy was not protected. In Canada researchers found that only half of potential sperm donors would donate without compensation. Another Canadian study found that most couples going through the infertility process prefer anonymous sperm donation. Only 21 percent of those surveyed chose a donor whose identity would become known to the offspring.
