New Study Finds Coffee Does Not Cause High Blood Pressure

A study conducted by researchers at Boston’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that women who drink coffee face a slightly lower risk for high blood pressure than those who don’t drink coffee at all.

The government-funded study examined data on 155,594 women. They were questioned periodically about their diets and health during the 12-year study. About 33,000 were diagnosed with high blood pressure.

The researchers found women who drank more than three cups of coffee daily were 7 to 12 percent less likely to develop high blood pressure than women who drank little or no coffee. The study’s lead author, Dr. Wolfgang Winkelmayer, believes that coffee’s beneficial effect on the heart comes from it contains plenty of antioxidants.

On the other hand, participants who drank at least four cans of sugared cola drinks daily had a 28 to 44 percent increased risk of high blood pressure, compared to those who drank few of these drinks or none. Diet sodas also increase the risk, but not as much. Date Posted: December 19, 2005
