The Secret of Older Moms |
New research conducted at Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem found that the ability to conceive later in life may be inborn. When the Israeli researchers studied Ashkenazi Jewish women who got pregnant without medical intervention after age 45, they discovered a unique group of genes that includes those involved in DNA repair and cell death.
Study author Neri Laufer, M.D. believes that these women may have a genetic advantage that protects their ovaries from DNA damage and cellular aging. She found similar genetic profiles in Bedouin mothers who gave birth after age 45.
Laufer’s study was recently presented to colleagues at a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.
