Guidelines for a Healthy Pregnancy |
Following the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Medical Association (AMA), the federal government issued recommendations concerning improvement of prenatal care through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The guidelines were published in the April 2006 issue of Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report and are accessible at www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5506a1.htm.
The guidelines include encouraging women to quit smoking, achieve a healthy body weight, and to take folic acid daily. They also address more than a dozen conditions that require intervention in order to achieve a healthy pregnancy and a healthy child.
